WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL THERAPY?

Root canal therapy is a specialised procedure designed to address the issues with the pulp of a tooth.

When the pulp, which contains the blood vessels and nerves that supply the tooth,  (known as the pulp) becomes infected or inflamed.

If left untreated, this can lead to severe pain and potentially lead to complications such as abscesses, or even tooth loss.

WHY MIGHT I NEED A ROOT CANAL?

There are several reasons why you might need a root canal. These are some of the common conditions that could necessitate this treatment.

  • Persistent toothache or sensitivity to heat and cold
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums near the affected tooth
  • Discoloration or darkening of the tooth
  • A pimple-like bump on the gum
  • Dental Trauma
  • Large untreated cavities
  • Dental Abscess

WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?

By undergoing root canal therapy, teeth can be restored to a health state and alleviate any discomfort associated with the condition. During a root canal, we create a small access point to access the pulp chamber, the damaged or infected pulp is carefully removed using specialist instruments, the inner tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to remove any remaining bacteria or debris, the cleaned root canals are then sealed with a temporary filling, it to prevent any further infection and allowing the tooth to settle.

At your follow-up visit, your dentist will conduct a thorough examination of the treated tooth to ensure all infection has cleared and that the tooth is healing properly. Once the dentist has confirmed that the infection has resolved the tooth can be permanently filled.

Your dentist will carefully assess whether root canal therapy is necessary and guide you through each step of the process. As this treatment typically involves several appointments, it will be tailored to your individual needs to ensure the best possible outcome.
