WHAT IS A DENTAL CROWN?
A dental crown or ‘cap’, as it is often referred to, is a type of dental restoration that completely encases a tooth, it sits over the top of a natural tooth that is now beyond the repair of a filling but can still be saved. Dental crowns are usually made from alloy or porcelain and are custom made for you.
WHY MIGHT I NEED A CROWN?
- Protect a tooth weakened by decay or fracture
- Restore a tooth after root canal treatment
- Improve the appearance of a misshapen or discoloured tooth
- Strengthen teeth with large fillings or those at risk of breaking

WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?
The treatment for a dental crown involves several steps. Once your dentist has conducted a thorough examination of your teeth, they will determine if a crown is necessary. Your dentist will also explain the different types of crowns available and help you decide which one is best for your needs based on aesthetics, function and budget.
During the first visit, the dentist will reshape the tooth, to create room surrounding the tooth for the crown. The dentist will take an impression mould of your teeth, or a digital 3D scan of your teeth. This is so the laboratory technician is able to create a perfectly fitting crown for your tooth. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while your custom crown is being made. At the second visit, the permanent crown is securely bonded to your tooth, restoring its strength, functionality, and appearance.
